Rockford, IL USA – April 8, 2020 – WATT Global Media recently released the results of its exclusive 2020 Poultry Nutrition & Feed Survey, which helps define the feed and external market trends shaping poultry feed businesses over the past 12 months.

The editors of Feed Strategy, WATT PoultryUSA, Industria Avícola and Poultry International magazines surveyed 385 participants who produce and use poultry feed worldwide. The survey was conducted in both English and Spanish.

The 2020 survey reveals how changing consumer preferences, regulations and macro trends are impacting global poultry feed production. This includes developments resulting from the spread of African swine fever (ASF) since first detected in August 2018.

Most of the survey respondents (38%), however, have not yet been impacted by ASF, although an additional 36% state that the disease led to their company gearing up poultry production and 23% feel it will contribute to profitability in 2020.

When asked about the business outlook at the time of the survey, nearly 50% of respondents were optimistic about their company’s growth in 2020. However, this is down slightly from 51% in 2019. Of the survey participants, 44% were nutritionists, consultants and veterinarians and 24% worked in live production management or were poultry farm owners.

To measure concerns about the most pressing industry challenges, 78% of survey respondents stated grain costs and 65% reported quality as the main concerns. This was followed by feed and food safety (59%), tightening or deteriorating margins (57%) and volatility in the cost of micro-ingredients and feed additives (47%).

“Globally, we are seeing the impact of marketing conditions on poultry feed production, even by small margins, including the effects of ASF, consumer consumption trends, trade uncertainty and push to eliminate antibiotic usage,” says Jackie Roembke, Editor of Feed Strategy magazine. “These factors will continue to shape the market, alongside the more recent influence of the global pandemic.”

Results from the 2020 Poultry Nutrition & Feed Survey can be accessed in the March digital edition of Feed Strategy magazine.
